23Now these were the numbers of the divisions that were equipped for war, and came to David at Hebron to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord : …32of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command;
I Chronicles 12:23, 32 NKJV

In a long official list of those who came to join David after Saul had died we come to the sons of Issachar. They were noted for understanding the times they lived in. More impressively they knew what to do in their times. Most impressively they were unified under their leadership. These men came to David at a crucial time. The kingdom was in transition. Saul and most of his line had been killed in battle. There were leaders throughout the the military who could have seized control (at least partial control) of the country left in disarray by the destruction of its primary leaders. Instead they chose to join with a rival of their former leader to solidify the country and not give their enemies an chance to press them in battle and take their land and possessions from them.

I want to be like those sons of Issachar who realized what was significant about their times and acted appropriately to bring victory to their people. It is time for us see that we are truly it he last days. It is time for us to cleanse ourselves and shine like the stars in the night sky. Lord, grant me Your understanding.
