For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him.
II Samuel 14:14 NKJV

David’s family was in a terrible situation. It was by their own doings. David hadn’t parented well. Amnon had raped his half-sister, Tamar. Her brother, Absolam, had waited two years to avenge her by murdering Amnon. Scripture that when David heard about the rape he was angry, but he didn’t do anything about it. Now Absolam was in exile in, Geshur, a foreign province that had maintained a mostly friendly relationship with Israel. Joab arranged for a local woman to present a fictitious case with similar merits so that David could judge objectively. This ruse worked and David brought his son home.

Absalom’s final rebellion not withstanding, Joab’s teaching through this women still applies to us today. If we can’t find ways to restore our relationships after there is catastrophic failure we will be like water that is wasted when it is spilled. We have to make our heart like the Lord’s so that it devises ways to return those who are banished from our lives before they are permanently expelled from our lives.
